Preparing Your Wolf Outdoor Grill for Chicago Winter
Chicago winters test every piece of outdoor equipment, and your Wolf grill is no exception. Proper end-of-season preparation prevents freeze damage, corrosion, and spring startup problems. A protected grill emerges from winter ready to perform; a neglected one may need expensive repairs.
Start with a thorough cleaning. Remove grates, flavorizer bars, and heat plates. Scrub all surfaces to remove grease buildup. Grease left on components through winter becomes a sticky, corrosive coating that is much harder to remove after months of freeze-thaw cycles. Clean everything down to bare metal where possible.
Inspect burner tubes for blockages and damage. Spiders and insects commonly nest in burner tubes during shoulder seasons. A blocked burner tube is the most common spring startup problem. Use a burner tube brush or compressed air to clear each tube. Check for rust holes or cracks that indicate a tube needs replacement.
Disconnect the gas supply. For natural gas grills, turn off the shut-off valve at the supply line. For propane units, disconnect the tank and store it upright in a ventilated area away from the grill. Do not store propane tanks indoors or in enclosed spaces.
Check the ignition system. Test each igniter and replace any that are weak or non-functional. It is easier to address igniter issues now than in spring when you want to start grilling. Moisture from winter weather can damage already-compromised igniters.
Apply a light coat of cooking oil to grates and steel surfaces to prevent rust. Stainless steel still corrodes, especially near the lake where salt air is a factor. This thin oil film provides a barrier against moisture and oxygen during storage months.
Cover the grill with a properly fitting Wolf grill cover or a high-quality aftermarket cover that resists wind, rain, and snow. Ensure the cover is secured against Chicago winds. A cover that blows off in January provides no protection for the remaining winter months. Consider wind straps or bungee cords for additional security.
