Wolf Cooktop Igniter Issues: What the Clicking Means

The clicking sound your Wolf cooktop makes when you turn a burner knob is the ignition system working. An electrode creates a spark near the burner, igniting the gas as it flows. When this system works properly, the click-click-click leads to ignition within a second or two, and the clicking stops.

Continuous clicking after the burner lights usually means moisture is present in the igniter switch assembly. This is common after boil-overs, heavy steam cooking, or on humid Chicago days. The solution is often as simple as drying the igniter area thoroughly. Turn off all burners, lift the burner caps, and let the area air dry for several hours. If clicking persists, a gentle wipe with a dry cloth around the igniter electrode may help.

If a specific burner won't ignite at all but you hear clicking, the electrode for that burner may be cracked, misaligned, or coated with residue. Food splatter that carbonizes on the electrode tip prevents proper spark generation. Gentle cleaning with a non-metallic brush can remove this buildup. Do not use water or metal tools on the electrode.

When no burners produce any clicking sound, the spark module that powers all igniters may have failed. This is a single electronic component that generates the high voltage spark for every burner on the cooktop. Replacement requires professional service as it involves working with the cooktop's electrical system.

A burner that clicks continuously even when turned off indicates a stuck or shorted switch. This draws continuous power and can wear out the spark module prematurely. If your cooktop clicks when all knobs are in the off position, disconnect power at the breaker and contact us for service. This should not be left unaddressed.

Wolf induction cooktops do not use igniter systems. If your induction cooktop makes clicking sounds, the source is the induction coil control circuitry, which operates differently. Clicking in induction units can indicate incompatible cookware, a failing coil, or a control board issue. Professional diagnosis is recommended.
